What are temporary to permanent resident pathways?

Immigration Minister of Canada Marco Mendicino on April 14, 2021, launched IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, Citizenship Canada) policies to develop numerous permanent residence pathways for international graduates and essential workers who are working in Canada. What are temporary to permanent resident pathways?

The aim to introduce immigration pathways is to grant permanent status to international graduates and temporary workers who live and work in Canada. These immigrants also possess experience and skills to boost the economy of Canada post-pandemic.

For over 90,000 international graduates and essential workers, Canada is creating a pathway to permanent residence. 

To be eligible for this program, residents should have work experience of at least one year on approved essential occupations. International graduates should have completed an entitled post-secondary course within the last four years (not earlier than 2017, January) in Canada. 

Application and streams limits

There are six streams under this pathway program: 

  1. 3 are precisely for French speakers. 
  2. 3 for both French and English speakers.

Under the immigration program, Canada will be accepting,

  1. 40,000 applications for international students who are graduated from an entitled Institute of Canada. 
  2. 30,000 applications for temporary healthcare workers. 
  3. 30,000 applications for temporary workers of other eligible occupations. 
  4. Unlimited applications for French-speaking healthcare workers. 
  5. Unlimited applications for French-speaking non-healthcare essential workers.
  6. Unlimited applications for French-speaking international graduates of eligible Canadian institutions.

Occupations qualify as healthcare workers

  1. Chiropractors
  2. Optometrists
  3. Dentists
  4. Family physicians, Specialist physicians and General practitioners
  5. Registered psychiatric nurses and registered nurses
  6. Nursing co-ordinators and supervisors
  7. Home support workers and housekeepers
  8. Public and social service workers
  9. Program officers, Health policy researchers and consultants
  10. Psychologists
  11. Social workers
  12. Patient service associates, Nurse aides and orderlies
  13. Dental assistants
  14. Denturists
  15. electrophysiological diagnostic technologists and Cardiology technologists
  16. Medical sonographers
  17. Medical radiation technologists
  18. cardiopulmonary technologists, Respiratory therapists and clinical perfusionists
  19. Medical laboratory technicians and pathologists
  20. Physiotherapists
  21. Dietitians and nutritionists
  22. Pharmacists
  23. Dental therapists and hygienists
  24. Medical technicians and technologists (except dental health)
  25. Massage therapists
  26. Speech-language pathologists and audiologists etc.

Occupations qualify as non-medical essential workers

To qualify the non-medical essential workers should have working experience of at least one year in Canada in the last three years in qualified occupations. There are hundred qualified occupations under the new permanent resident program.

How to apply for the new permanent resident program?

Essential documents needed to apply for the permanent resident program

  1. Digital photo 
  2. Medical examination report
  3. Police clearance
  4. Passport copy 
  5. Work permit letter from the employer of Canada
  6. Canadian immigration permit copies 
  7. Language proficiency proof 
  8. Education credential and Canadian education transcripts copy (if valid)
  9. Civil status credentials 
  10. Completed application form

What is the application fee of the new immigration resident program?

To apply for the program, candidates are required to pay total fees of $1050CAD while applying to one stream. If the candidate also includes their spouse or common-law partner, they need to pay fees for accompanying dependent children and spouse. 

How long will new immigration resident programs be accessible?

All six special policies central to the new immigration resident programs come into effect on May 6, 2021, and last till November 5, 2021. However, if the mentioned application numbers reached early before May 6, candidates will not be able to fill the form further.  

Important Note: Once permanent residence status is attained by the candidate under the new immigration program, the candidate can live anywhere in Canada except Domain of Quebec. 

However, if the candidate is currently working or living in Quebec and they satisfy the criteria of the program, they can apply for the immigration resident program.
